A new study suggests that “Viagra” might be safe for those at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Nachumara, a doctor at the University of Chicago, said that a study in 2018 found that men taking Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drugs were 2.6 times more likely to develop the condition.
Viagra, Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug, is prescribed to more than 100 million men, including older men, as well as women and children.
Viagra works by blocking a specific enzyme that is crucial for the process. It works by helping to relax the blood vessels in the penis, allowing the muscles in the penis to return to their normal size.
But it also can cause headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
It has been a long-standing issue for researchers who studied whether Viagra might be safe for those at high risk of heart disease.
Nachumara said the research, which was presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference on Wednesday, suggests that those at high risk for cardiovascular disease are more likely to use this drug.
“I think that these findings suggest that the effects of this medication may be very subtle in clinical practice,” he said. “In fact, the vast majority of men who are taking the drug, or those who are taking their first prescription, for ED will develop symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness and fainting.”
Viagra is not approved for use in women. The drug is not approved for use in children.
The study involved more than 8,000 men and women who had been taking Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drugs. The researchers looked at data from a year-long study of more than 2,000 men and women in the United States.
Most were between the ages of 18 and 64 years. About 75% of those taking the drugs had a history of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease.
Viagra has been used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the past.
The drugs’ manufacturers said in a statement that the drugs “are not intended to be used as a substitute for medical treatment.”
The researchers also found that men who were taking the drugs were more likely to report feeling better about themselves or their partner.
“The authors’ findings suggest that men at high risk of cardiovascular disease could be using this drug safely,” said Dr. Nachumara.
The men had an average age of 49 years, compared with 45 years for those not taking the drugs.
The researchers compared data from more than 100 clinical trials. They found that men taking the drugs were 2.6 times more likely to develop the condition.
In a statement, Pfizer said, “Pfizer is pleased to inform our readers that the data presented in this report is not new. The company has been making Viagra available through various channels for more than 20 years.”
The companies also have taken note of the study, which looked at the effects of the drugs on blood pressure.
The study, published in the journal American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, found that those taking the drugs had a 2.6-fold higher risk of having a heart attack compared to those not taking the drug.
Viagra has been prescribed to more than 100 million men.
The drugs have been used to treat erectile dysfunction in the past, including some in the treatment of high blood pressure.
The researchers also looked at the safety of the drugs in men with cardiovascular disease. They found that those taking the drugs were about twice as likely to get heart attacks and had a 1.6-fold higher risk of developing the condition.
The study was funded by Pfizer, Pfizer Inc., GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis AG, the makers of Viagra and Cialis, and Novartis. They said in a statement, “The findings in this report are consistent with other studies in men and women, in which men taking these medications have a higher risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction and may benefit from.”
The company said it is working on other research that could potentially help women take more nitrates. It also is looking at its own nitroglycerin product.
